Topic: Indigenous Varieties of Zadar County and Crljenak (Zinfandel) – From Croatia to America
Lecturer: Prof. Edi Maletić, PhD
Researchers utilized advanced DNA profiling to compare grape varieties, definitively proving that American Zinfandel, Italian Primitivo, and Croatian Crljenak Kaštelanski are genetically identical.
The scientific investigation began in the late 1990s, driven by ampelographic observations of morphological similarities that sparked a determined search through the historic vineyards of the Dalmatian coast.
The discovery was confirmed in 2001, when genetic analysis provided conclusive evidence that the ancestral home and the true origin of this world-renowned grape variety is, in fact, Croatia.
